BOOK REVIEW – The Secret Garden

The Book ‘Secret Garden’ is written by Frances Burnett. She was born in England. With an active imagination she wrote stories and enjoyed narrating them. She had begun writing for a livelihood and wrote non-stop. She started writing children’s fiction and adult fiction.

Mary Lennox, born in India and was the most-disagreeable child. Due to cholera, Mary’s whole family died. She had to stay with her uncle Mr. Craven whose house was on moor. Martha (Maidservant) told Mary stories about her family. Mary was free. There were beautiful gardens. A garden was shut after Craven’s wife’s death and the key was buried under the ground. Mary heard cries of a child. Vigorous exercise on moor had positive impact on Mary. With help of robin (bird), Mary finds the garden key. She followed the cries and found her uncle’s son was bed ridden. Mary found the illness was in his mind. Colin was brought to the secret garden .Colin’s health improved. They kept it a surprise for Craven.  Craven’s wife‘s voice told him to go in the secret garden. On opening the doorknob Colin came running to him and once again son and father were united.

This book is great as it increases the vocabulary .It gives a vibe of something mysterious and ghostly. It gives us a moral of seeking pleasures in simple things. I will give it 4.3/5 and recommend it to teenagers and adults.
