A SOCIAL CALL OF OUR HERITAGE

On 9 December 2017, Saturday the students of St. Kabir School, Naranpura visited ‘Dhal ni Pol’ near Astodia to learn themselves and create awareness about our rich heritage and its conservation. The heritage walk was organised by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in collaboration with Mahila Housing Trust. Around 42 students from Grades 6, 7 & 8 participated in this event.

This involved all the local residents in order to undertake activities including the heritage walk amidst various buildings and structures erected on inclined roads (Dhaal Ni Pole), Temples, mausoleum, Khadkis and Sheris. In their walk they were also allowed to participate in playful activities which are rare in this fast forward life. It all started with their visit to Halder vado Khancho where they were welcomed with a teeka on their forehead with vermilion. It was all an exemplary way of treating the guests like God, just like our ancestors did. During this walk the students were were explained about different architectural styles including Hindu, Muslim and Jain, many of which were carved on saag wood. They were explained with the help of stories about the construction of houses which never deteriorate during any natural calamity.

During their walk, they came across many birdfeeders called Chabutaras which again exhibit an act of kindness towards birds. They were explained how rainwater harvesting was important for our ancestors as they saw many underground water pits in different houses. They also visited a temple which was separated from a Mosque by just one wall where they learned that inspite of different religions our hearts beat as one. Until now all these things were mere words printed in the books but the actual meaning can be learnt through experience like this. Students enjoyed and understood that they must play a key role in maintaining and preserving our heritage.
